"We Can't Stop" is a R&B, urban pop track with a length of three minutes and fifty-two seconds. It is written in the key of E major and Cyrus' vocals span two octaves, from a low D# to a high F#. It follows the chord progression E—G#m—C#m—A. The song starts with a distorted voice singing the first verses, then Cyrus' vocals begin followed by the keyboard chords. The pre-chorus and the chorus are accompanied with heavy beats. Miley admits that the single says "where I am in my life right now". John Kennedy of Vibe compared the song to Rihanna's style of songs.

There has been speculation that the songwriting has drug references when listeners thought one of the lines said "We like to party/ Dancing with Molly" - "Molly" is a slang term for ecstasy. However, the producer Mike WiLL Made It confirmed that she sings "Dancing with Miley", not "Molly".

Can't Hold Us is a song by American rapper Macklemore and producer Ryan Lewis from their collaborative album The Heist (2012). Featuring singer Ray Dalton, it was released as the third single from the album on August 16, 2011. Production was handled by Martin and Shellback, with Scott Borchetta serving as executive producer.
